Warning Signs Of Oncoming Water Heater Repair

Warning Signs Of Oncoming Water Heater Repair

Knowing When Water Heater Repair Is Imminent

Water heaters are often neglected because they aren’t things you see every day, but you do use them on a regular basis. If you don’t maintain them, just like any other appliance in your home, they’ll break down. When that happens, you’ll be annoyed at the lack of hot water. Since water heaters are usually in out of the way areas, like the basement, they’re easy to overlook. But if you want yours to keep working, you’ll need to keep an eye on it so you’ll at least have a warning that things are about to stop working on you. Here are a few of the warning signs to watch out for so you know water heater repair is going to be necessary soon:

The Water Heater’s Age

The top of the water heater should have a manufacturer’s sticker on it that tells you age of the water heater. Most companies will recommend that you get a new water heater every 8-12 years, depending on the type and how much water you use. If you recognize that your water heater is anywhere from 8 to 12 years old, have a professional inspect it before it dies on you and you are left with an emergency situation on your hands.

Water Is Only Warm, Never Hot

Sometimes, you want warm water, but when you need it hot, if all you can get is warm, there’s a problem. You might have a heating element burned out on an electric heater and on a gas heater, the pilot light might be out. But if all things are okay and the water still won’t get hot, water heater repair is in your near future.

Colored Or Smelly Water

Water is supposed to be clear and it shouldn’t have a scent. So if your water starts to look rusty or have a smell or taste to it, like metal, there could be sediment flakes mixing with the water. You could flush out the water heater to see if that works, but water heater repair might be necessary as well.

Leaks Around The Water Heater

Leaks are very serious because water heaters use both water and electricity. If you notice any leaks, shut the water heater down right away and get water heater repair. There might be cracks in the tank, which will cause replacement to occur. Either way, you don’t want to mess with the danger of mixing water and electricity together.
