1. Finish School
The first thing that you need to do to start your career as a plumber is to finish high school or a GED program. People don’t realize how vital basic knowledge of physics, algebra, and chemistry are to being an effective plumber. That’s why most vocational training programs require that you at least have a high school degree or GED before they’ll accept you into the program. If you want to go above and beyond in high school, one of the best things that you can do is take blueprint classes, so long as they’re offered by the high school that you’re attending. Make sure that you take care of business with your education before you go into vocational training if you want to make it as a plumber.
2. Vocational Training
The next thing that you need to do is undergo a vocational training program that’s reputable in your area. You can usually find these at your local community college. Make sure that at the end of the program you’ll earn official certification to do plumbing work. You’re going to learn a ton about how to become a plumber, so you need to really buckle down during this time, because vocational training for this occupation is no joke. Take your vocational training seriously, and you’ll be ready to take on an apprenticeship.
3. The Apprenticeship
The next thing that you need to do is fine an apprenticeship that runs four to five years, and will cover everything that you need to know to be a successful independent plumber. This is where you get the real-world experience that’s impossible to get anywhere else. You’ll learn how to effectively implement all of the things that you learned during vocational training, and from there will be able to get licensed with everything that you learned.
4. The License
You’re finally ready to take the plunge and take the licensing test to become an independent plumber. This is an incredibly important test, so you need to make sure that you study up. The qualifications for this test are going to vary depending on where you are, so look up the specific qualifications in your state and then go from there. Most of the states are going to require that you have 2-5 years of experience as a plumbing apprentice, so that apprenticeship is going to come in handy when you’re trying to get that license. If you pass, you’ve made it! You’re now ready to start as an independent plumber and have a rewarding, long career.
