So You Want to Become a Plumber
One of the most lucrative, useful fields that you can get into is plumbing. Although the work may be dirty at times, it’s one of the most necessary jobs that are out there for modern life. People are always going to have plumbing problems, so they’re always going to need people that can solve them. Do you want to become a plumber? Here are a few steps that you can take to help you secure a plumbing job in the future.
1. Get a Diploma
Having the basics down is one of the most important parts of becoming a plumber. You need critical thinking skills to solve complex plumbing problems and physics/mathematical skills to finish the job. Without these, it’s going to be difficult for you to make it as a plumber. That’s why, for the most part, in order to get into a good vocational school, you’re going to need a high school diploma or a GED.
2. Vocational Training
You’re not going to learn how to be a plumber in high school, meaning that you’re going to need a great vocational school education with hands-on experience to make sure that you know the ins and outs of complex plumbing systems. Without that, you’re going to have no idea where to start, and you’re going to be hard-pressed to find a plumbing company that’s going to hire you without the vocational training needed.
3. Apprenticeship.
If you want to really succeed right out of training as a plumber, you should work as an apprentice to a master plumber for at least 4-5 years. Not only is this going to ensure you get the best training possible, you’re also going to receive a much higher salary and go into the workforce with years and years of training. Anyone will tell you in this economy that it’s so hard to find a job, you need to have experience before you go into the industry for this first time. By taking the extra time to be an apprentice, you’re going to be more than ready to be a master plumber in no time at all.
4. Get Your Plumbing License
Did you know that in order to be a plumber in most states, you need to have a license? Although the standards vary from state to state, someone who really knows their stuff and went through vocational training should have no problem getting a license, especially with all of the hours that you end up working as an apprentice. Find out your state’s requirements for what it takes to become a plumber.
Being a Plumber is Hard Work
At the end of the day, although it’s a hard job, being a plumber is one of the most rewarding careers that you can have. You receive plenty of pay, you get to work with your hands, and at the end of the day, you end up getting a sense of pride from the work that you’ve done and the services that you provide for other people. Start your journey by getting the high school and vocational training that you need, and then move on to your apprenticeship and getting licensed in order to become a plumber. You’ll be glad that you did.
