A Plumber’s Advice On Water Conservation
Water is the source of life and with more areas struggling with droughts and clean water sources, it makes sense to cut back and conserve now than ever before. Even if you aren’t seeing a drought in your area, you can lower your utility bills by using less water. There are a number of big and small ways you can cut back on water usage. You may not be able to do it all at once but choosing a few things your plumber advises and then adding to them later can help. Here are some options to try out:
A Shower Bucket For Other Uses
Most people turn the shower on and then wait for a few minutes to let that water warm up before they step in. That makes sense, but it also wastes a lot of water. Instead of letting that go down the drain, put a bucket in the shower to catch that water. You can use it for watering plants or flushing the toilet later.
Turn Off The Tap
When you wash your hands, do you run the water while scrubbing on the soap? When you brush your teeth, is the water running while you do so? Turn the tap off any time you aren’t actively using water. Water comes out, on average, at one gallon per minute. Even half a minute can save you half a gallon.
Plant New Plants
If you have a large yard that takes a lot of water to maintain, install some new landscaping to get rid of as much water-thirsty items as you can. There are many plants on the market that don’t need a lot of water, or you can put in some boulders and other things that look nice and take no water at all to cut back on what you use outside.
Use Only Full Appliances
Don’t run the dishwasher unless it’s completely full and don’t do any laundry until you have a full load. You can save a lot of water by cutting even one cycle out a week. If you can wait, do so and make sure you fill those items up when you use them to make the most out of the water.
Fix Leaks Right Away
If you have a leak in a pipe or faucet, make sure you call your plumber right away. You could save quite a bit of water by getting that leak fixed. Even one little drip every few seconds adds up to a lot of water over the course of a day. And that’s water you aren’t using but are paying for.
